Traveling Team Tryout Policies and Procedures
Revised August 2006
I. Purpose
The purpose of these policies and procedures is to establish a uniform process for
the tryout proceedings of CPTBA, and to provide a fair and just opportunity for
each player to demonstrate his/her ability. The policies and procedures are
further intended to promote the integrity of the selection process by requiring
the traveling coaches to be accountable for their selection decisions. The
final player selection decisions are left to the sound discretion of the head
coach as long as they are within the parameters set forth herein. The policies
and procedures are intended to assure that the decisions are based upon
players’ demonstrated skill and ability as assessed by the "A" level
head coach, and supported by the assessments of independent evaluators during
the tryout process.
II. Application
These policies and procedures apply to all traveling tryouts with equal force
to all grade levels and gender. The tryout procedures, rules, dates, and times,
will be established by the tryout committee with approval and coordination with
the CPTBA board of directors. The tryout committee will be comprised of three
association members with at least one of the three members being a current
director on the CPTBA board of directors. The rules and procedures can be
amended with board approval to facilitate the tryout objectives and purpose
stated above.
III. Tryout Dates and Times
The dates and schedules times for the tryouts will be determined each season by
the Board of Directors of CPTBA, with the support and coordination of the
tryout committee. A total of three tryout sessions will be held in the determination
of player selections to CPTBA traveling teams. Players are strongly encouraged
to attend all three sessions, but at a minimum, must attend two sessions.
IV. Medical Exception
If a valid medical reason prevents a player from participating in the tryout
sessions, the coach must obtain permission from the tryout committee and CPTBA
board approval before such player can be placed on a traveling team. Permission
will not be granted unless the request is accompanied by a written explanation
that demonstrates reasonable and valid considerations for why such player
should be placed on a team. Team selection and assignment for approved medical
exceptions will be at the discretion of the "A" team head coach.
V. Player Selection
The "A" head coach is responsible for selecting those players who
will play on the "A" team. The "B" head coach will be
responsible for selection of players for the "B" team. The final
player ranking as determined by the independent evaluators will be used by the
respective assigned head coaches at their discretion in selection of players to
respective teams. The "A" team coach's son/daughter will
automatically be placed on the "A" team, but they must attend the
minimum number of tryout sessions (two), or have a valid medical exception.
In the event that the "A" team head coach is unable to attend the final tryout session and finalize team selections, a member of the tryout committee will be required to participate and review the final tryout session. Team selections will then be completed by the tryout committee member based upon the compiled results from the independent evaluators for all three sessions, and with input of the "A" team head coach based upon their assessments developed during the prior two tryout sessions. If at the time of the tryout sessions "B" team head coaches have not been determined, then it is the responsibility of the "A" team head coach to finalize player selections for the "B" team.
The coaches team selection and evaluation forms will be forwarded to the President after the last day of tryouts for review and approval. After this review and approval the final selections will be posted on the CPTBA website.
VI. Team Size
The policy for team size within CPTBA is nine (9) players per team. Deviations
(higher or lower) than this number will be allowed subject to consent by the
head coach, and approval by the board of directors.
VII. Tryout Evaluation Criteria
The tryout sessions are intended to allow for head coaches and independent
evaluators to assess and evaluate players' skills and ability as they perform
drills and scrimmages during the sessions. Established assessment criteria
provide for the evaluation of each player in four major categories:
· Basic skills (weight 40%) -
lay-ups, jump-shots, passing, dribbling, rebounding, free-throws, etc.
· Intangibles (weight 20%) - speed,
footwork, quickness, athletic ability, hustle, general effort, jumping ability,
etc.
· 3 on 3 (weight 20%) - offensive and
defensive abilities and performance during 3 on 3 scrimmages.
· 5 on 5 (weight 20%) - offensive and
defensive abilities and performance during 5 on 5 scrimmages.
In addition to the evaluation of the above four categories, an assessment of the potential position or positions for each prospective player will be assessed during the tryouts. Independent evaluators will be required to acknowledge on a form approved by the Association (see evaluation form below) the team assignment (A/B), and the numeric ranking (1-9, or more). Evaluators must note the date, grade, gender, and player numbers, and must sign their name on each evaluation form.
VIII. Tryout Session Organization and Structure
The organization, structure, and specific drills of any tryout session shall be
left to the discretion of the "A" head coach for each grade and
gender session. "A" head coaches at their discretion may recruit
another party to run the tryout drills, or may request that a member of the
tryout committee assist in the final selection process in the event of their
absence, and/or where assistance is requested for further selections of the
"B" team. Such "party" must not be related (a family member
or relation) to any player trying out for the specific team in question. Only
head coaches (A/B) that have been designated and assigned by the board of directors
of CPTBA for the season in question and for that particular grade and gender
can be on the court during the tryout session.
Independent evaluators must not be related (a family member or relation) to any player trying out for particular team (grade and gender). Evaluators must be able to fairly and justly evaluate each particular session being unbiased in their assessment. It is an evaluator's duty to bring to any member of the tryout committee, and/or to any director of the CPTBA board of directors, any potential conflicts of interest that would prevent a fair and objective evaluation of a tryout session. If such conflict exists, the evaluator must remove themselves from evaluating the session in question, and may be reassigned for another session (grade and/or gender) where such conflict does not exist.
IX. Parents and Family Members Observation of Tryouts
Parents and other family members are encouraged to view the tryout sessions.
However, no parent or family member will be allowed on the courts during the
tryout sessions. Observations must occur from the upper deck area (
Parents and other family member may only be on the courts if they are selected and designated as a head coach for a CPTBA traveling team for the upcoming season, or are acting as a volunteer assisting in the organization of the tryouts, or are acting as a independent evaluator. If such family member is acting as an independent evaluator, they must be on a different court (a court where son, daughter, or relative are not competing for selection to a team) in performing the duties of an evaluator.
X. Exceptions for Playing Outside of Grade Level
Participants will play at their designated grade level. Exceptions will be
considered for children not yet in 5th grade who choose to try out for the 5th
grade teams. If there is an insufficient number of 5th graders to fill out
either an A or B team roster, then the child not yet in 5th grade will be
considered for a roster position.
